( 05/18/07 ) The current market rally has been strong and many
major market indices are celebrating new highs. The below
CCP charts
capture this move Up. However, the
internal
market strength is poor and issues a warning.
It should also be noted that the current market rally has
just brought the S&P 500 back to where it was 7 years ago. So
much for the "Buy & Hold Crowd".
Below is an internal chart of the Nasdaq100, which captures
the recent insane market gyrations. I do not think this strong
move Up is sustainable. The
Proshares 200% Ultra short ( inverse ) funds ( QID, TWM,
DXD) may be appropriate vehicles for portfolio insurance.

The U. S. Dollar index may be bottoming.

Check
out the below Country ETFs. They have been outperforming the
sectors as well as the SP 500. However, some of them are now
Declining. Is this a warning sign for the U. S. Equity market?

Market
bottoms can form with a spike Up, but market tops seldom form
with a spike Down. It's more usual to experience two or three
local tops in succession.

Caution
is appropriate when playing the short side as Declines are much
steeper than advances and even if the market was going to crash,
you will encounter short but strong moves Up.

The CCP
tables and charts display the Top risk adjusted sectors
over both short and long time frames.

( 7/14/06) The sector approach presented on
this web page augmented with Market Timing
and Rydex short positions when appropriate
has performed satisfactorily for several
decades.
However the introduction of exchange traded
funds(ETF) that provide Commodity (DBC),
Crude Oil(USO), Euro(FXE), Gold
bullion(GLD), Gold stocks(GDX), Silver(SLV)
.... positions, and additionally ETF that
allow
short or Long positions within IRA's
have dramatically altered investment
strategies.
For these reasons I am going to change the
focus of this web page from sectors to ETFs
and stocks. I have no idea how this
development will unfold other then I have
changed my mindset.

After some thought, I decided adding ETFs
etc to this web page might be confusing, so
I have elected to present ETF, ECN, HLDR,
etc. information on another web page. Please
check it out.

Rydex Investments launched the first currency
ETF, Euro Currency Trust
(
FXE Euro Currency Tr NYSE
) , on the New York Stock Exchange in
December. The ETF is geared to rise when the
euro strengthens against the dollar and to
decline when the euro weakens.
Shares of the trust represent 100 euros, held in
London, plus accrued interest. Since ETFs trade
like stocks on exchanges, investors can short
the euro fund or buy it on margin.

Why Market Timing?
For weeks prior to the below events
SelectSectors.com posted daily that a
Double Red Alert
was in progress.
LA Times ( 9/22/01)
About 1.4 Trillion Dollars in investor wealth
evaporated during the week, raising fears that
consumer spending will drop and add more
pressure to the economy.
9/17/01 ( From MarketWatch.com)
On record volume, the Dow fell 7.1 percent
registering its worst-ever point loss, while
Nasdaq fell 6.8 percent. But trading went
smoothly even as $600 billion in market cap was
wiped away.
Additionally, during this period the top
SelectSectors.com pick was Select Gold ( FSAGX )
which out performed all other Market sectors
during this time frame.
